Standard
drills are manufactured in HSS or HSCo
with a blue, bright or bronze finish.
Certain drills are coated with Titanium
Nitride (TiN), Titanium Aluminium Nitride
(TiAlN) or Titanium Carbo-Nitride (TiCN),
where this would combine with the design
of the tool to
bring higher productivity
and longer tool life.
Drill lengths can
be divided into jobber, stub, long
series and extra length. Jobber
length drills produce hole depths of
up to 4 x diameter, whilst stub drills
have a shorter flute length and produce
hole depths of up to 2.5 x diameter,
which makes for good drill stability.
Flute geometry is
designed to take into account the cutting
behaviour of the workpiece, for example,
slow helix drills for short
chipping materials and quick helix drills
for long chipping, ductile materials. |

Three
types of shank are offered as standard
–
- straight
shank (cylindrical)
-
Morse taper shank and
-
stepped shank (with whistle notch
DIN 6535 HE or without whistle notch
DIN 6535 HA).
The choice
of shank is usually dictated by
the machine being used.
For maximum productivity, greater
tool life and hole accuracy, careful
drill selection and the use of correct
feeds and speeds is essential.
